I recently went on vacation. It was actually the first vacation with our daughter. Only being a little over 2 months we weren’t sure how she would do on a trip away from home. She had been sleeping 7-8 hours a night so I know we are very very lucky. I’m actually afraid to write it! 1) For backlash from the people that did not have this experience, which I realized quickly our experience is not the norm. 2) Fear that it would change our current good fortune.
Obviously it was an extra special vacation and I wanted to make sure I was present.
What does that mean?
It means not checking email all the time, it means leaving my phone behind or turning it off. It means preparing prior to leaving so people know what to do and who to contact.
My email away message looked like this…..
I will be out of the office on vacation. I take my vacation seriously just as I do my work! I work probably between 2500-3000 Hours a year (maybe more) so these 40-80 hours are mine. It is so important to unplug. I will not be responding to messages so if you need me please reach out again after the XXth when I will be back in action! If you need something prior please reach out to my office at XXX-XXX-XXXX. I encourage you to do the same when you go away. It will IMPACT the way you show up when you are back.
PS: Your family will thank you the most
Before you say that will never work...think about it. Maybe reread it.
We’ve all been there. The problem with coming back is you have SO many emails that you promised to get back to. Voice messages as well. Instead of coming back fresh you come back behind. WAIT! To avoid this you play SEMI away and still email and answer some calls depending who they are while on vacation.
THIS IS NOT VACATION.
Most people I know will easily work 2500-3000 Hours a year. These are YOUR 40-80 hours of vacation. TAKE them! Embrace them and learn to step away. At first you will struggle...and it will be extremely difficult but you will thank me later.
Because you will have been present with your family. They will notice. They will thank you.
You will recharge yourself in a way that you probably didn’t even know you needed recharged
If you love work as much as I do...You will be HUNGRY to get back to it.
It allows your brain to relax and open up to new ideas and new ways of thinking about things. It may be work or it may be life. Listen to what you hear when you turn off work.
When I came back to work I was refreshed, recharged and didn’t have a long list of people I promised to get back to. (Note I put this message on my phone too) I clearly stated that I would not get back to you. If it was urgent you had someone to contact. If you wanted me I clearly stated when I would be back. The ball is in your court.
If you are not sure how this applies to you I’d love to help you. Lets connect.
When I work with people it's not only about their business strategy but it's about taking a holistic view of how they are operating not only inside the business but outside. I would love to talk through how you can recharge on your next vacation even if it seems impossible! I want you to be the BEST YOU.
