At 16, I just received my driver’s license. Prior to getting my license, I had lined up a few landscaping clients. Typically, when you start out, you get all the tough jobs that no one else wants to do like brush clearing and similar drudging tasks. On my first day, I had a brush clear out and a mow for the same client. I did the job, and the client couldn’t say enough about how great my work was. I was proud. I felt like this whole thing was going to work out. It’s that awesome feeling when you do something well and others notice.
Driving home, with my Ford Tempo pulling a gutted popup camper, I was probably the laughing stock of the town with my setup; but I didn’t know any better because it was all I had. It worked for me.
As I pulled into the driveway, my stepdad came out and verbally attacked me like he frequently did. Saying things like I could never use the family lawnmower again, and telling me how terrible I was.
Any normal dad would be proud of their son for taking initiative...but not this guy.
At that very moment, I made a decision that changed my life. I left home.
I grabbed my stuff and moved out.
From that moment, I never looked back. I have been faced many times with Negative Momentum, but I made choices to overcome the negativity. My story isn’t perfect but it’s persistent.
Momentum is a choice that is not by luck. You have control of your own momentum. Sometimes the toughest decisions lead you to the greatest Momentum...in your life or business.
