Scramble your eggs not your business!
As I get older, I realize that scrambling through life doesn't get you anywhere...only ten steps behind to reaching your goal. This is true for both your personal life and as a business owner.
The other day I had every intention to get ahead of my never-ending to-do list. My plan was to tackle some necessary errands then spend the afternoon working. Instead of sticking to my plan, I sat down to answer emails. After about an hour, I looked at the clock and realized I was already behind schedule. I grabbed my keys, my package to mail and rushed out the door.
I went to get out of my car at the post office, but realized I forgot my mask at home. Now, I had to drive home, grab my mask, and drive fifteen minutes back to the post office (hoping to make it before they closed). I was even more frazzled than before I rushed out the door the first time. I almost forgot I had a 4:30 PM meeting.
All of this craziness, stress and unproductively could have been avoided if I had stuck to my original plan-get up, run errands, work...it was really quite simple. The backtracking and extra time spent to complete my tasks put me even more behind on my list than I already was! By 5 PM, I was burnt out and did not have the energy to work. The same thing happens all the time in business!
As a business owner, we come up with these great plans...plans for the year, plans for the quarter, plans for the month, plans for the week and plans for the day. We have the best intentions, but all of these plans don't mesh well with the unexpected interruptions of every day life. We are left rushing around, scrambling to do the bare minimum and feeling drained.
I know you know this already because we have all been there, but when we rush, when we scramble, we make very BIG, COSTLY mistakes. At first, it may just seem likes small mistakes, but these small mistakes create a ripple effect and it all adds up...costing your business a ton of money and potential revenue.
You're left tired, frustrated and possibly with your business is in the RED. It's not thriving and you're barely surviving. You wake up at 5 AM, take a quick shower, rush out the door, stop at McDonald's for a large iced coffee (filled with sugar) and a McMuffin...just to get you through the morning. At this point, your well-being isn't even a priority. Before you know it, it is 9 PM (3 coffee runs later) and you're just getting in the door. All you want to do is sleep, but you can't stop thinking about tomorrow. You're hoping that it will be the day you get ahead and make strides for your business! Sounds like a dream, as you quickly doze off to "Breaking Bad" reruns in the background and your cold Taco Bell sitting beside you.
Let me guess...this isn't what you had envisioned when you started your business. You dreamed of success, making an impact and hitting your business goals with MOMENTUM. Don't give up hope. You can do this. If you stick to the course, chip away at the plan and keep going! It may take a little longer than you expected, but you'll get there.
